Australian Tug of War Association

ADVICE ON TRAINING A TUG OF WAR TEAM

In selecting pullers to form a team, it should be born in mind that Tug of War is an exceedingly strenuous exercise and training for it can be very monotonous.

The pullers selected must, therefore, be definitly keen, hard-working and cheerful characters. Any pullers of surly disposition given to frequent grousing is much better left out of the team as he will have a very bad effect on the others. The puller best suited to tug of war sould have, or be able to develope, broad shoulders, thick thighs and legs with well developed arms. Above all, they must have plenty of grit and be prepared to put up with any amount of hard work.

The range of weights for competition in Australia are :

MEN : 560kg, 600kg, 640kg, 680kg, 720kg and Catch weight.

LADIES : 520kg, 560kg and Catch weight.

YOUTH : 560kg 8 people - Aged 13 to 17 years old. "CAN BE MIXED IN GENDER"

In the case of a specified weight maximum for eight people includes the minimum dress requirements for men is shorts, ladies is shorts with a t-shirt and/or aerobics/croptop.

There is no limit in catchweight competition. If difficulty is experienced in selecting the heavy weight team, it should be remembered that keenness, strength, and stanima are more important than actual weight. It is better to have eight really good people a little underweight rather than put in a couple of substitutes to make up the weight.
